Tampa's Laser Center gets ready to roll out Premium Nutritional Supplements: Vitamin D news
As Aura Laser Centers get ready to roll out their extensive nutritional line in the coming weeks, new news in the realm of multivitamins has recently been completed by Harvard Medical School. The information has a direct correlation to those living in Florida, where the sun shines bright most days of the year.
Vitamin D supplements reduce the arterial stiffness associated with pervasive vitamin D deficiency among black teens, even in sunny climes, researchers found.
Black teens in a randomized trial who took 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily saw a significant improvement in carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity after 16 weeks (5.33 versus 5.41 m/s at baseline, P=0.031), reported Yanbin Dong, MD, PhD, of the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Ga., and colleagues.
Teens who got only 400 IU per day as a control group saw a worsening in arterial stiffness over the 16 week trial with carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity rising from 5.38 m/s at baseline to 5.71 m/s at the end of the study (P=0.016).
Although the impact of high dose supplementation was relatively small, "such small favorable changes in adolescence might impact the development of cardiovascular diseases later in adulthood," the authors wrote in the October issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests 200 IU as an adequate dietary intake of vitamin D, but the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends twice that for children and adolescents.
The researchers recommended that the level should be set even higher for black youth, who produce less endogenous vitamin D for the same sun exposure than those with lighter skin. The open-label Vitamin D Supplement Study for Adolescents included 49 black teens (mean age 16.3) recruited from high schools in the Augusta area in sunny Georgia.
